Designing a leading journal on foreign affairs and national security

Designing a leading journal on foreign affairs and national security

The Texas National Security Review (TNSR) came to us at the beginning—Volume 1, Issue 1—with a goal: to launch a new quarterly journal at the intersection of world affairs, security, and policy. The journal features rigorous, peer-reviewed research aimed at the public, national security professionals, and policymakers. What they needed was a publishing partner to help bring each issue to life.

Our work begins three months ahead of each issue’s print deadline. To manage the production process, we set timelines, coordinate feedback, handle typesetting, oversee cover and article illustrations, and prepare print-ready files—keeping everything on track using project management tools.

While journals in this space often fall back on visual clichés, TNSR does things differently. How do you illustrate something like the effects of cyber warfare without showing maps with arrows? How do you show great powers competing with one another without defaulting to flags facing off against each other?

We looked beyond the usual suspects, drawing inspiration from creative magazines and design platforms that had nothing to do with security or policy. The resulting illustrations and cover designs range from realistic to abstract to surreal, each one finding its own visual language.

Since launch, TNSR has become known not just for the quality of its ideas, but for its distinctive visual identity. We’ve been their production partner from the start and continue to support their mission issue by issue.
