Meet the tribe: Katie Mihailovits

Position: Creative
Specialism: Graphic Design

What does a normal day look like for you?

I tend to get woken up most days around 6am by 3 howling cats. Once they are fed I’ll check my emails. A lot of our clients are based in the US so emails do tend to come in over night.

If I’m not heading into the office I’ll usually have a quick catch up call with Tom and discuss ongoing projects and then I’ll get down to design. Throughout the day I’ll also spend time speaking with clients discussing their projects.

On Mondays and Tuesdays I teach the part-time Graphic Design Course at Shillington College so I’ll usually head there around 4pm to meet the other tutors to prepare for the evening’s class.

What do you like best about working at Cast From Clay?

There is a lot of flexibility in how we work. The standards in terms of quality are extremely high but as long as they are met we can work when and where we like.

I value this a lot as being sat in the same place all day 5 days a week does not yield creative results. I am much more productive moving around and have discovered that I can be at my most focused in a coffee shop surrounded by noise!

It’s important to spend time together though and on Mondays we always make sure we come together as a team to catch up.

What kinds of projects do you work on?

I am responsible for all the creative output, so I work on a range of projects for clients including printed reports, websites and social media. I also oversee the work of any freelancers we work with for specific projects, for instance we work with an artist who creates great illustrations for one of our journals.

What’s your swear jar word?

I don’t have one as my conversation is always lively and diverse, I do try and keep chat about my 3 cats to a minimum though.

What piece of advice would you give yourself at the start of your career?

Having had a couple of career changes, but now very happily settled as a designer, I would say finding a career in something that you have a genuine interest in is really important. Your job is what you spend most of your week doing so if you don’t love what you do it can be tough.
